What is Glaucoma Monitoring?
Glaucoma monitoring is the ongoing and systematic assessment of individuals who have been diagnosed with glaucoma or are considered at higher risk of developing the condition. This process involves regular eye examinations and specialized tests designed to track changes in intraocular pressure (IOP), the optic nerve, and visual field over time. The primary goal of glaucoma monitoring is to detect any progression of the disease early, allowing for timely adjustments to treatment plans to prevent or slow down further vision loss. These regular check-ups are crucial for preserving sight and maintaining a good quality of life for individuals living with or at risk of glaucoma.
What to Expect?
During Your Glaucoma Monitoring Appointment
We believe in utilising cutting-edge technology to gain a thorough understanding of your eye health. During your glaucoma monitoring appointment, we have a range of equipment at our disposal, performing precise and detailed examinations. Depending on your specific needs, your appointment may include some or all of the following tests:
- Icare Tonometry or Goldmann Applanation Tonometry: These are the gold standards for accurately measuring the pressure inside your eyes (intraocular pressure or IOP), a key risk factor for glaucoma. We utilise both methods to ensure reliable and consistent readings.
- Henson 9000 Fields Test: This sophisticated test meticulously assesses your visual field, both your central and peripheral vision. Detecting any subtle loss of vision is crucial in monitoring the progression of glaucoma.
- Anterior Heidelberg OCT Scans: Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) provides detailed cross-sectional images of the front structures of your eye. This specific scan helps us assess your risk of acute glaucoma, a sudden and serious form of the condition.
- Heidelberg OCT of the Optic Nerve and Posterior Pole: This advanced imaging technique provides high-resolution scans of your optic nerve head and the back of your eye (posterior pole). These scans allow us to meticulously examine the nerve fibre layer and identify any structural changes indicative of glaucoma.
- Corneal Thickness Measurement (Pachymetry): The thickness of your cornea can influence IOP readings. This quick and painless measurement helps us interpret your eye pressure accurately.
- Dilated Volk Slit Lamp Examination: Following the application of dilating eye drops, our experienced optometrists will use a specialised microscope (slit lamp) and a Volk lens to get a magnified, three-dimensional view of your optic nerve. This allows for a direct assessment of its health and any signs of damage.
- Photographs of Your Eyes: Taking digital photographs of your optic nerve provides a baseline record and allows us to monitor any changes over time with greater accuracy.
Your Comfort and Understanding are Our Priority:
We understand that undergoing these tests can feel a little daunting. Our friendly and knowledgeable team will ensure you are comfortable throughout the entire process. We will explain each test clearly before it is performed and answer any questions you may have.
Time Commitment:
The duration of your glaucoma monitoring appointment can vary depending on the specific tests required to provide a comprehensive assessment. Please allow up to 45 minutes for your appointment.
